For nearly 50 years, the\u00a0Corvette<\/strong> has had a special place in America\u2019s garage. The\u00a0wheelbase is longer, the track is wider, structural rigidity is far higher, and there are far fewer\u00a0pieces in the whole assembly, which improves rigidity and quality. To maximize the power in the ’02\u00a0Z06 5.7-liter V-8,\u00a0405 hp<\/em><\/strong>, GM Powertrain engineers took out weight and\u00a0impedances to airflow throughout the\u00a0LS6 V-8<\/strong> engine. The valves now have hollow stems and the air cleaner\u00a0has a smoother flow pattern. By ditching twin catalytic converters near the exhaust manifold, they shaved\u00a0a little poundage. The six-speed transmission has been stoutened, too, with thicker clutch discs and\u00a0stronger damper springs.<\/p>\n
