The full name “Oldsmobile”<\/strong> was first used in 1900<\/em>. Prior to that, the automobiles were\u00a0known simply as “Olds”<\/strong>, built by the Olds Motor Works<\/strong> of Lansing.<\/p>\n

There are those who claim that it was Oldsmobile<\/strong> that created the first muscle car when it\u00a0stuffed its hot new fullsize Rocket V8<\/em> into its midsize model to create the Olds 88<\/strong> and Super 88 <\/strong>series back in 1949. But it wasn’t until 1964 that Oldsmobile would return to the concept,\u00a0encouraged by the success of the Pontiac GTO<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For 1970<\/em>, option code W-32<\/strong> created one of the all-time great street-sleepers of the muscle\u00a0car era. Basically, this code resulted in the 442 drivetrain<\/strong>, which included the 365-horsepower\u00a0455 and dual exhausts, stuffed into the new-for-’70 “formal roof” Cutlass Supreme body style.\u00a0A Turbo 400 automatic<\/em> was the only trans offered. With Cutlass Supreme<\/strong> styling and the\u00a0understated SX<\/em> ornamentation wrapped around a 442 heart, the SX<\/em> had to be Olds’ ultimate\u00a0Q-ship. By the way, the SX package<\/strong> became option code Y-79 in 1971, the only other year it\u00a0was offered.<\/p>\n
