The Pontiac GTO<\/em><\/strong> is considered by many the first true muscle car. Whereas other\u00a0manufacturers were concentrating on their fullsize lines, Pontiac<\/strong> saw the potential\u00a0for dropping a big block engine into an intermediate frame and marketing it at a\u00a0budget price. Pontiac sneaked past the GM<\/em> restriction on this combination by making\u00a0the GTO<\/em> an option on the Tempest model, creating the hottest performance machine yet.<\/p>\n

GTO<\/em> is the monogram for the most famous muscle car in high-performance automobile\u00a0history – the Pontiac GTO<\/strong>. Also known as “The Legend”<\/em> and “The Great One,”<\/em> GTO is\u00a0the car that started it all. Prior to 1964, performance cars were full-size hardtops\u00a0and sedans with the largest displacement engines available. They were a little slow\u00a0off the line, but once all that sheet metal and chrome got rolling, they pulled like\u00a0a freight train. Hot rodders had known for years that you could go even faster if\u00a0you put those big engines in smaller, lighter cars. This was the thinking for the new\u00a0GTO<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Pontiac made the GTO<\/strong> its own model for 1966 and was rewarded with sales of 96,946<\/em> units,\u00a0the highest ever for a true muscle car. The GTO<\/strong> was restyled with gourgeous coke-bottle\u00a0contours with the roof and taillights receiving the most attention. Undaunted by the death\u00a0of their tri-power setup, for 67 Pontiac<\/strong> unveiled an all new 400 cid<\/em> enlargement of the\u00a0389 cid engine. The rear and grill were restyled again and the new 400 cid engine was\u00a0available in economy (255bhp), standard (335bhp), High Output (HO) (360bhp) and Ram Air\u00a0(360bhp) versions. The tiger could still roar<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This 1967 Pontiac GTO<\/em><\/strong> Convertible<\/em> is in outstanding condition inside and out.\u00a0The exterior is Cameo White<\/em> with a Dark Turquoise<\/em> vinyl interior and black power soft top.\u00a0Under the hood sits a 400 C.I.<\/em> V-8 with upgraded MSD Ignition<\/strong> and a 3 speed automatic\u00a0His\/Hers Hurst<\/em> Shifter. Options include: Pwr. brakes, Pwr. steering, Pwr. Soft Top and in-dash\u00a0Alpine CD Player. This stunning example runs and drives very well. Thousands of dollars\u00a0invested over the years in the frame-off restoration. The undercarriage, engine compartment and trunk\u00a0are as nice as the rest of the car.
