In the mid-fifties the head of Maserati<\/strong>, Omer Orsi, gave Ing. Giulio Alfieri<\/em>, Maserati’s\u00a0chief engineer, the task of designing a fast reliable road going Granturismo<\/em> that could\u00a0be produced in larger numbers. Maserati<\/strong> had until then produced road cars in very low\u00a0numbers mainly in response to orders from individual customers. It was this strategy that\u00a0was to change Maserati’s<\/strong> fortunes.<\/p>\n

The 3500 GT<\/em> was first presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1957. Two prototypes were\u00a0displayed on the Maserati stand: one by Allemano, the then traditional designer for the\u00a0‘Casa del Tridente’<\/em> and the other the work of Carrozzeria Touring of Milan.\u00a0Touring had designed a very elegant 2+2 coup\u00e9 and it was this design that Omer Orsi chose\u00a0for the series production. Between late 1957 and early 1958 the 3500GT<\/em> entered production.<\/p>\n

The 3500GT<\/strong> was more entitled to be named a ‘sports car’<\/em> than a ‘Granturismo’<\/em>. Powered by\u00a0an engine evolved from the Tipo 250F Formula 1 car and based on the successful Tipo 350S\u00a0sports racer, the 3500GT<\/em> had a maximum speed of around 145 mph combined with excellent\u00a0acceleration.<\/p>\n

1964 was the last year of production for the Maserati 3500 GT<\/strong><\/em><\/strong>. This elegant 2+2 coup\u00e9\u00a0is a combination of elegant coachwork and luxurious design. Under the hood is a\u00a03485 cc 6-cylinder in-line engine with triple Weber carbs producing 220 bhp @ 5500 rpm.<\/p>\n

The all aluminum body<\/em> is extremely solid, only the paint has some visible chips as a result\u00a0of age. The black interior much like the exterior shows some signs of wear. This is an\u00a0extremely rare Maserati<\/strong> as there were only a limited amount ever produced. An excellent\u00a0example of a classic Italian “Granturismo”<\/em> Design.<\/p>\n
