The Lotus Europa<\/strong> was built from 1966 through 1975 and was one of the first vehicles to use a mid-engine rear-wheel drive layout. During its production lifespan, around 9,300 examples were produced. Ron Hickman, the directory of Lotus Engineering, produced drawings in 1963. The vehicle sat low and was designed as a replacement for the popular Lotus 7.<\/p>\n

For 1972, Lotus produced both the Series 2 (with its 1565cc four-cylinder engine) and the Series 3 (also known as the Europea Twin-cam) which had made its debut in 1971. Powering the Series 3 was the same 105 horsepower engine found in the Elan. Top speed was in the neighborhood of 120 mph. New cast alloy wheels were added and the sail panels were slightly lowered, altering the cars appearance.<\/p>\n
