The Ford Thunderbird<\/em><\/strong> debuted in 1955 as Ford’s<\/strong> entry into the two seat sports car created by the Chevrolet Corvette. The Thunderbird<\/strong> was always about style, and the clean styling, creature comforts, and V8 refinement made it a sales success. The Thunderbird<\/strong> was only available as a convertible, but a distinctive removeable hardtop with circular portholes was available and was a popular option.<\/p>\n

The Ford Thunderbird<\/em><\/strong> was Ford’s answer to the Chevrolet Corvette. But whereas the Corvette never strayed far from its two seat sports car concept, the Thunderbird<\/strong> would soon add a hardtop coupe version, a back seat, and even two more doors as the do-everything personal car for Ford over the years. But it always provided decent performance along with a dash of style.<\/p>\n

1961 was the first year of the third generation Thunderbirds<\/strong> which featured all new exterior styling that earned it the nickname “Projectile Birds<\/em>“<\/strong>. Chassis design was carried over, but was reworked slightly for a smoother ride and better handling. The exterior styling featured a severely pointed front “prow,”<\/strong> modest fins above huge renditions of Ford’s traditional round tail-lights, and softer roof contours on hardtops.<\/p>\n

This is one gorgeous example of a great American classic<\/em>, the first year of the “Projectile Birds<\/em>“<\/strong>. Fitted to this car; a 390 cubic inch 300 HP V-8 Special<\/em> engine, with a column shift Cruise-O-Matic Automatic Transmission. The exterior is finished in Violet<\/em> with a Black<\/em> interior and reupholstered bucket seats, rear seat remains original and shows normal wear. Options include: Pwr. Steering, Pwr. Brakes, Power-Lift Windows, 4-Way Power Driver’s Seat, working factory AM Push Button Radio, and Restored black Pwr. Soft-Top<\/strong>. This convertible runs and drives great, solid throughout, a classic motoring feel.<\/p>\n
